Once, not so very long ago, Canggu was just a quiet fishing village that only a few surfers had heard about. It was a secret surf spot for those who know Bali well and travel there regularly for a surf holiday. Then, from one day to another, this quiet, beautiful fishing village turned into the next best hot spot on the island. Cafes and clubs were popping up everywhere, and the world slowly started to hear more about Canggu. Favourite among ex-pats, Canggu soon became as popular as neighbouring Seminyak with trendy hipster cafes, surf shacks, boutiques and hippy art markets.
The area of Canggu is quite stretched out, with the most popular areas being Berawa and Batu Bolong. Berawa starts where Seminyak and Batu Belig end, home to Finn’s Recreation Club, Finn’s Beach Club, Milk & Madu, Cafe del Mar, Vue and many cafes you’ll love. Batu Bolong is the lively trendsetting street that leads to Echo Beach, passing Old Man’s, The Lawn, Mason’s and more restaurants and branded shops. Pererenan is quieter but also upcoming, and in between, there are many secret hot spots, rice paddies, coffee hubs and yoga places.
Canggu is popular for families wanting a quieter, more relaxing holiday, groups of people who want to get away from it all and soak up the ‘what Bali was like 10 years ago ambience, digital nomads that want to sit in cafes the whole day working remotely and backpackers looking for cheap accommodation in Bali style homestays. Finn’s Recreation Club was invented for families and is popular among ex-pat families. The place features a waterpark, tennis court, kids’ club, bowling alley, gym, spa, and trampoline bounce centre.
ParkLife
Parklife Bali is the latest hot spot in town, a beautiful family park with rice field views located in a quiet, unspoiled area of Canggu. There are indoor and outdoor playgrounds with slides, swings, bouncing castles, toys and more. There are also guided kids’ activities, including storytelling, face painting, treasure hunts, etc. The staff is dedicated to making kids have the time of their lives. Parents can relax on bean bags and enjoy the rice field views. There is a fabulous cafe on-site to get some delicious food and drinks. Make sure to pack swimwear for the kids to play with water, fountains and sand.
Bali equestrian centre
Pony rides, grooming, cuddling and more, kids from 3 years old and up will love spending time at the stables of Bali Equestrian Centre in Canggu. Kids from 7 years old can go for a horse riding adventure on the beach and through the villages. The centre also has a swimming pool, restaurant and playground, making it even more lovely for families.
Surfing lesson
If your kids love surfing or want to try something new while staying near the beach, then Canggu has some great waves at Old Man’s & Berawa Beach. More advanced surfers, girls and boys, can go surf at Echo Beach and Pererenan Beach. Canggu is a surfing mecca, and you will soon see why surfers from all over the world flock here to surf near perfect beach breaks. You can hire a surfboard for Rp 200 000 for 2 hours. That’s just $20!! Or you can go for a (family) surf lesson with one of the surf instructors on the beach. Tamora Gallery
Shop and play at Tamora Gallery in Canggu. Tamora Gallery is a shopping arcade with fabulous cafes, designer shops, a large open-air playground, and a skate bowl. A great place to come down for a coffee and some shopping without worrying about the kids getting bored. There are also weekly events, from night markets and food markets from the afternoon till late evening to movie screenings and special kids activities on Sundays.

If there’s one thing Canggu is not short of, it’s fabulous restaurants and trendy cafes. Most of them can be found along the popular Batu Bolong area, but if you are prepared to explore, there are loads of cool little cafes and restaurants on the side streets. They are mostly unpretentious, have a casual dining atmosphere, and are family-friendly. There are also amazing cafes and restaurants in the exciting area of Berawa. They run from the Finns Club along Jalan Pantai Berawa to the beach. There are so many great places for a meal that you’ll find it difficult to choose – especially if you’re travelling with kids. Milk and Madu

Pels Supershop
This has the most amazing salads with great food and smoothies in the central Berawa area in Canggu. Very popular with digital nomads and travellers staying in Berawa.

Deus ex Machina
An institution in Canggu and is located between Jalan Batu Bolong and Batu Mejan. Make sure you allow time for some shopping and those Instagram shots of you on the famous Deus motorbikes.

Crate Cafe
This cafe was busy the whole time and was one of the first to arrive in Canggu. It also has great views over the rice fields. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are huge. The crate should be on your Canggu bucket list.

Butterman
For those who love freshly made pastries and croissants, Butterman in Berawa is the place to be. It’s a recent addition to the now-popular Canggu bakery scene and is super-popular with ex-pats, locals and everyone who loves the tastiest pastries in Canggu. Oh, yes, we told you that the Butterman coffee is amazing!!
The Lawn
Great views over the beach; this is a must-visit cafe/restaurant/ beach club. Make sure you come for a sunset cocktail!

Nightlife in Canggu
Kuta, Legian and Seminyak used to be THE places to go partying, but Canggu is leading these days with parties and nighttime fun every day of the week. Whether you are looking for a beach party, an underground grunge bar with a punk band, a nightclub with amazing DJs or a New York-style nighttime venue, you can be sure you’ll find it all in hipster happening Canggu. If you want to go out every night of your Canggu stay, you can try a different place every evening.
Here are some of the most popular bars in Canggu: Don’t forget to book a villa near where you want to go party. There are plenty of them. Better if you could walk home after drinking all those cocktails at your favourite bar.
Mejan
In the heart of Canggu, between Echo Beach and Batu Bolong, is a new nightspot called Mejan. Here you can continue the party till late with DJs, great music and casual vibes. It’s open from 10 pm till late, so this is where you come to party hard and enjoy a few drinks.

The Lawn
The Lawn is located on the beach, not far from Old Mans; drive to the end of the street and turn right to get there. This beachfront bar and restaurant are ideal for sunset drinks with ocean views, a swimming pool, and synthetic grass with picnic plaids and parasols. Sip your cocktail and listen to great live bands while soaking up the sunset vibes. Then, stick around for the after-midnight fun with DJs and people who like to party. You can get a 2-for-1 cocktail on Friday nights between 8 and 10 pm. Prices are on the high-end side but worth it for the atmosphere.

The Back Room @ Mason
Mason is the latest to-be hotspot for nightlife in Canggu. Packed with people, the party area at Mason is called The Back Room, and it has a chic New York-style interior design with leather booths, billiard tables and fabulous hand-crafted cocktails. Live DJs and ongoing dancing crowds until closing time. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss out on!

Gimme Shelter
Do you like it loud, grungy and underground? You must check out Gimme Shelter in Canggu after dark. Alternative bands with original songs, rock and roll and punk rock bands will find it here. Gimme Shelter has a proper stage, it’s dark, and the venue is air-conditioned. There are open mic nights, rock and roll movie screenings and more. Gotta love it!

SandBar
SandBar is located on Batu Bolong Beach. People come here for beach parties; you can expect this place to get busy! It’s nothing fancy, just a humble bar on the beach, but this place gets wild after sunset, and you can dance here until the wee hours of the night. Dancing barefoot in the sand under the stars and by the sea. Sounds pretty good, right?! The best nights to come here are Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Lost City
This is the first nightclub in Bali, something like Sky Garden in Kuta but more designed to appeal to the Canggu partygoers. The Lost City is a two-level party venue at Echo Beach in Canggu. This is a great place to lose yourself and dance the night away with art lighting, state-of-the-art audio systems, and renowned DJs.

Beaches in Canggu
Canggu has volcanic black sand beaches with perfect surfing waves for both beginners and pros. There are gorgeous sunsets to be seen almost every day, and many beach clubs where you can chill out with sunset drinks, good music and laid-back vibes.
Echo Beach
Echo Beach is the most famous beach in Canggu. It offers perfect waves for surfing, a relaxed vibe and breathtaking sunsets. There are also several beachfront cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or a drink, including Echo Beach Club and the boho-chic La Brisa.
Batu Bolong Beach
Batu Bolong Beach is another popular beach in Canggu, situated near the Batu Bolong Temple. This beach in Canggu is usually packed with surfers, as it’s also a great surf spot for beginners. Batu Bolong has a vibrant atmosphere with many beach bars and restaurants, including The Lawn and Old Man’s. The sea is also great for swimming during low tide. There are also regular beach parties, events and live music performances.
Berawa Beach
Berawa Beach is popular but less crowded than some other beaches in Canggu. At the same time, there are famous clubs in this area, too, such as Finn’s Beach Club, Atlas Beach Fest and Cafe del Mar. If you’re a keen surfer, Berawa has some great waves for an early session and is popular for the late afternoon paddle. Follow this up with the must have coconut juice on the bean bag!

Pererenan Beach
Pererenan Beach is a more desolate and secluded beach in Canggu. It’s known for its rugged beauty, black sand, and mesmerizing sunsets. Great for sunset beach walks! The waves here are suitable for experienced surfers, but it’s not recommended for swimming due to strong currents.
Shopping in Canggu
There is no shortage of shops where you can do serious damage to your credit card.
Canggu is ideal for shopping. There are now quite a few new boutiques and shops along with the Batu Bolong and Batu Mejan areas (look at Flvx & Friends, Suennoaj, Earth Circus, Tropicana, Vissla & Asmara) catering to all tastes, mainly clothing, surfwear, and jewellery. There are daily markets called Love Anchor in the middle of Jalan Batu Bolong ( about 750 m from the beach ), which are worth a visit for souvenirs and typical market stall items from local vendors.
Some of the stuff is pretty good, actually, and it’s really easy to find as there’s a huge sign outside. There are also some decent homewares shops throughout Canggu, such as Bungalow Living, Canggu & Co, Cove Island Essentials and The Jungle Trader in the Berawa area. Canggu also has some fairly decent shopping for the girls as there are now (recently built in the last 12 months) boutiques, jewellery, surf & swimwear stores just off Batu Bolong as you head to Batu Mejan.
