What Is A Warung?
Warungs are family-owned, local Balinese restaurants that often serve as an extension of their owners’ homes. These warungs are typically located at the front of their homes or, in many cases, are separate restaurants, decorated with food displayed in dishes on a counter, allowing you to see what’s on offer quickly. The more popular the warung, the more dishes they’ll have. All meals are cooked on-site, with home-style cooking, with each warung having its own unique flavours and style.
What happens is you’ll be offered rice to begin with (white, yellow or brown) and then you can browse the dishes on offer and add them to your plate. At the end, they’ll tally everything up, and you pay for what you’ve chosen. You can pile the dish as high as you like with chicken, beef, eggs, sate, noodles, and you won’t end up paying more than Rp 100,00 or AUD 10. The vibe is very casual, non-dressy, with no table service. Warungs are great for a quick meal on the go, a post-workout swim, a day at the beach, or a pit stop while spending the day shopping.

OMG, this place is so popular. You will have to queue up here and wait to get to the food counter for up to 30 minutes, but once you’re there, you’ll understand why. The food is delicious, and there are numerous options available. Without a doubt, this is the most popular warung in Canggu, if not Bali and they have the most amazing ayam bakar or BBQ chicken. Also, try their sate ikan (fish skewers) and tempe dishes. Because they are so busy, their turnover of food is high, meaning they have a massive choice of dishes to offer, so that you can get creative with your choices. Make sure to also add a tiny bit of sambal (Balinese chilli paste) to your rice – it’s yummy!

Warung Barra

Warung La Be’Ne
At La Be’Ne, you’ll be blown away by this fantastic little warung in the centre of Canggus’ popular Batu Bolong area, so it’s really easy to get to and well worth it! They offer a variety of dishes, including steaks, fish, and pasta, as well as traditional Indonesian favourites such as Nasi Goreng and satay. For those on a budget with a big appetite and keen not to stray too far from the centre, La BeNe hits the sweet spot perfectly. Warung Ulhus
If you can brave Jalan Raya Canggu (the main thoroughfare through Canggu), Warung Ulhus serves great Indonesian food, with chicken, fish, and meat all under Rp 50,000 or AUD 5. Try the ayam bakar (BBQ chicken) or nasi goreng with egg, crackers, and veggies – yummy!
Most travellers to Canggu won’t want to try it because it’s located on a busy main road, but trust me, it’s worth it!

Warung Local is a Canggu institution and one of the most popular warungs where expats go for an excellent feed. The food is served buffet-style, where you can choose rice with each dish and select from a vast range of tasty and appealing options. There are lots of popular Balinese and Indonesian dishes, and they also cater to vegans with an array of excellent veggie dishes. Prices for a full plate set you back about $4-$5, which is perfect if you’re on a budget or coming with a family and don’t want to spend a lot. For those who want to order from the menu, you can order freshly made nasi goreng, satay and the famous bakso soup. It’s located on the main strip of Batu Bolong, making it easy to get there, and you will notice it from the crowds that line up here for lunch and dinner.

Happy Rendang
This local warung, as the name suggests, specialises in the Balinese version of traditional beef rendang, a slow-cooked beef and pork dish with a delicious spicy taste. Warung Bu Mi
What can I say about Warung Bu Mi except that this was the first and original well-known warung in Canggu. I’ve been coming here for years, and it really put the whole warung food scene on the Bali map. Everyone used to come here for lunch and dinner, and the place was packed with expats, locals, backpackers and even families looking for a cheap eat that tasted amazing. The food is served buffet-style, where you select dishes from behind a glass counter, and then you are charged according to your choices. The range is extensive, featuring vegan, tofu, satay, fish, pork, noodles, rice, eggs, and beef dishes, all served fresh. The turnover is high, so the food hasn’t been sitting there for long. The location is also very convenient, right in the heart of Jalan Batu Bolong, making it easy to find. Even if you’re not a huge fan of warung-style eating, Warung Bu Mi is worth a try just for the delicious flavours, range of dishes, and an inexpensive, good feed.

Warung Dua Hati
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, healthy vegan meal in Canggu, Warung Dua Hati is a great choice. Located on Jln Batu Mejan, you’re not far from all the action, so pop by for meatless bakso, nasi goreng, delicious vegan skewers, and enjoy smoothies, coffee, sandwiches, waffles, gluten-free salad bowls, super healthy juices and pancakes. Dua Hati’s food is well-presented, healthy, and the place is incredibly popular.

Oma Jamu Vegan
I’ve eaten at Oma Jamu, and from the moment you step into this lovely rustic warung, you know you’re going to have a great vegan meal. There is a set price for the all-you-can-eat option, which is a fantastic value for the vast array of dishes on offer. There are numerous delicious vegetable dishes to choose from, and they also offer a wide selection of tofu, lentils and tempeh cooked in various ways. Because it’s an all-you-can-eat, this is one of the best value warungs in Canggu if you’re into vegan food. They also offer a selection of cakes and healthy juices (such as the ever-popular Jamu) for dessert, so save a bit of room – I love those protein balls. Although it’s on Jl Batu Bolong, it’s about a 5-10 min Go-Jek ride heading towards Jl Raya Canggu, so it’s a tad out of the way – but worth the effort.

Bakso Iga
If you want to try one of the most popular Indonesian dishes, known as Bakso (meatball soup), then head to Bakso Iga. The vibe is super chilled and the food is also very cheap (about 5 Aussie dollars) – great for those on a budget. This is one of the most famous and popular bakso places in southern Bali, as the soup is freshly prepared on-site. The best part is that you get a tender, juicy piece of rib meat in your soup, which is rare in Indonesia.
