Deus Cafe or Deus Ex Machina in Canggu Bali has got to be one of the most well known and popular cafes in the whole of Canggu. Situated just off the popular Jalan Batu Bolong and on the way to Echo and Old Man’s Beach, Deus Cafe is a place where so many people come to sample great food but marvel at the really cool custom motor cycles they have to sell. And they sell plenty of these!
Most visitors to Deus cafe are either locals, ex pates or families on holiday in Bali staying in a Canggu Villas ( which is becoming more popular). The place has a reputation be being chilled out and relaxed but they also have nights where DJ’s come to play and it turns into a cool hang out for everyone to get together over a few Bintangs and enjoy the ambiance with other like minded travellers.
The place is open the whole day serving yummy eggs and great coffee for breakfast, salads and wraps for lunch as well as Western and Indonesian dishes for dinner. It’s got a kids menu so it is child friendly. Deus is a place to hang out, relax have some great food and watch the chaos of Canggu unfold right in front of you. It is just outside the madness of Jalan Batu Bolong so there is still some semblance of peace – but we really do not see this lasting for too long as the area gets more cafes and bars competing for the tourist dollar.
It has rice field views so there is a sense of calmness among the traffic and hordes of tourists either heading to the beach for a surf lesson or those just wandering up and down Batu Bolong looking at the amazing and eclectic shops that seem to be popping up every day.
Deus Cafe is for some people more of a hang out. You see lots of people settling in for the day with their laptop ready to use their free wifi and spend a good few hours here catching up on their work emails. The staff don’t mind it, in fact, they encourage it and it just adds to the bohemian vibe. People also tend to wonder in not really sure what they place is all about. That is, unitl they discover the rows of custom motor cycles for sale. They are by no means cheap but Deus has a very loyal ex pat following that seem to adore these bikes. They are loud, very ‘hipsterish’ and suit the whole Canggu scene very well.
To add to eclectic nature of the cafe there is also a huge custom surfboard section where local and well known Australian shapers come to design and produce the most amazing surfboards for sale. These are all lined up nicely and shining in the shop on racks and compliments the motor bikes very well indeed. All you need is the deep wallet to fund your boyish cravings. The team at Deus have really picked the Canggu market nicely and it shows in everything they sell here. It aint cheap but the quality and the quirkiness place some of these items very high on the bucket list. So ladies if you are reading this and thinking about buying a one of a kind gift for your man, head over to Deus. It will be remembered as one of the best gifts ( especially the bike) you could ever buy.
