Surf Shops in Seminyak, Al Merrick & more

Bali is not all about the luxurious Bali villas, the amazing food, culture, scenery or people, but it is also famous for something else and that’s surfing. If you are a surfer and have been to Bali before then you will know the whole routine. You will more than likely be coming here with a group of friends or on a family holiday. You will most likely stay in one of our Seminyak Villas or Canggu villas near Echo beach and be well aware that this island has some of the best surf spots on the planet. You have been here loads of times before, know the place inside out and know where to go when you need to restock your surfing quiver  (a quiver is a collection of surfboards).

There are a couple of issues surfers face when they come to Bali and that’s getting their surfboard over by plane. There’s not only the added expense that Jetstar & Virgin charge from Australia but there is also the damage or ding factor by careless baggage handlers that treat fragile fibre glass surfboards like normal luggage.

To avoid the disappointment of dinged surfboards after a flight, or snapped boards after a big day out at Uluwatu, Canggu, Padang etc, Bali has a few really well-stocked surf shops in Seminyak. Most of these are found on Sunset Road just where it meets Eat Street. Here, as you can see in the video you will find legendary shapers such as Al Merrick, Chilli and Hayden Shapes. All of these shops have loads of accessories to go along with your surfboard purchase such as leg ropes, board covers, wax, decks, you name it and they have it, including clothing, board shorts and fins.

There are other surf shops around Seminyak and Canggu and even other parts of the island like Uluwatu. If your travelling to other parts of Indonesia like the Mentawais, these are probably the best shops to get all your pre-trip surf gear.

Many people and in some rare cases, associate Bali with inferior workmanship and with the quality of work, how shall we say, less than acceptable. Well when it comes to the quality of surfboard manufacturing in Bali, the boards are exactly the same standard with the same finishes as you would get back home in Australia or the US. You are getting like for like. You might also be lucky enough to grab a board for less than you’d pay in Sydney, Perth or Melb.

Throughout Seminyak, there are lots of other surf shops basically selling the same apparel and boards but the best bet for most keen surfers is the hit the main Sunset Road area where they’ll be basically spoiled for choice when it comes to the range and brands of surfboards they can buy. The beauty of this is that while your hubby or boyfriend is busy browsing surfboards, the girls can get their nails done or grab a facial at one of the many day spas located along Jalan Raya Seminyak or Kayu Aya.

So if you are a surfer or are keen to learn the sport and want to pick up a board then you know where to go. They are all there in a small cluster of shops just waiting for you. They all take credit cards and there are ATMs nearby if you want to pay cash. As far as we at Bali Villa Escapes are aware they do not do trade-ins or offer second-hand boards. These shops are all about selling pristine new boards and every associated accessory known to man. If you love surfing then you will love these shops.
