There are literally thousands of massage spas, and shops dotted all around Bali where you can simply walk in off the street and indulge in a traditional Balinese massage for around $10. Some places offer luxurious surroundings, and others are cheap and cheerful type. But they all have one thing in common, and that is the massages are absolutely fabulous, no matter where you are on the island.
Prices can vary depending on where you go, but most places will charge around Rp 100,000 for a 1-hour massage. Convert that into Australian dollars, and it’s about $10. How good is that? This means you get to indulge yourself for one hour with a fantastic private massage in an air-conditioned day spa for less than $10.
Many people often think that they have to go to a spa in a resort to get a decent massage in Bali, but this is far from the truth and reality. All you need to do is take a stroll down one of the many streets in Legian, Seminyak, Umalas, Ubud or Kuta, and you will know what I mean.
If you are holidaying in one of our Seminyak villas, all you need to do is step outside, walk a few metres, and you’ll more than likely see a day spa. They are everywhere all along Jalan Kayu Aya (or Eat Street), right through Jalan Legian and all the way to Pantai Berawa and Jalan Batu Bolong as you pass the Batu Belig area. They have colourful signage, and there are generally girls outside looking for customers as you walk by or pass by on your scooter. These are the local day spas and are probably the best value. The girls are super friendly, and you’ll end up having a great time.
There is a massage place at least every 200 metres. Walk in there, and you will be absolutely surprised by the cleanliness and hospitable, friendly welcome you are going to get. They might try and offer other services like hand and foot pedicures, perhaps a haircut, shave or facial to drum up more business, but at these prices, it’s a good deal.
” Bali Villa Escapes Tip: have a look at the state of the massage beds, and if the sheets look stained and like they haven’t been washed in a week or so, walk away“.
The truth is that most of the girls who work as masseuses have actually worked for many years in other boutiques or in more of the well-known spas in some of the best hotels in Bali. This means that you are going to get all their experience and knowledge for less than $10.
Because this is so cheap, ideally, if you are happy with the massage, then it’s a great idea to tip them, say, $5. This way, when you keep on going back to the same place, they will remember you, and you will get the VIP treatment. They might even throw in a free foot massage for 5 minutes – you never know!
Because these types of massages are so expensive in Australia, this becomes a real treat, and you will find yourself setting aside a few hours every day for this piece of self-indulgence. I know of people that actually get two massages every day. Because it’s so cheap and the massages are absolutely fantastic, make sure you do not miss out on this experience when you visit Bali.

Price of massages in villas
If you are staying in one of our Private Luxury Villas, make sure you ask one of the staff if you can get a massage by your private pool for that added indulgent luxury. You can always negotiate a rate with the staff, but as a golden rule, don’t bargain too hard and keep the price at around the AUD $30 mark. Because you have it in your villa, this price will most likely go up to around $30, but well worth it. Most of the local masseuses are local and work in the day spas near your villa. They can generally be in there within a couple of hours, but it is best to book a day in advance. Most villa managers will be able to organise this very quickly. All you need to do is ask.
” Bali Villa Escapes Tip: if you like your massage lady, make sure you book her in every day if you can for the same time. This way, she won’t be booked out at another villa, and you are guaranteed the same dreamy experience”‘.
Price of massages in hotels
If you want to ramp up the luxury level, you are in for a real treat if you decide to have a massage in one of the many 5-star hotels and resorts in Bali. Prices here are definitely not what they are on the street, and you will be looking at anywhere from $120 AUD upwards, depending on the type of treatment you decide to have.
You will notice the obvious difference in terms of decor, ambience and overall level of luxury and sophistication. If you are willing to spend that bit extra, it’s definitely worth it. Having said that, the messages all seem to be the same wherever you go, so you’re really paying for the niceties and atmosphere. There are dozens of these ultra-chic day spas all over the main tourist hot spots, but the following four are our favourites by far.
