Restaurants in Bali I can’t wait to try in 2024

Bali is buzzing, and so many exciting restaurants are tempting holidaymakers throughout the island; my tastebuds are jumping for joy!

From healthy breakfasts, long brunches and boozy lunches to the best vegan cafes and amazing dining experiences – we are all foodies here at Bali Villa Escapes.

Regarding the best restaurants in Bali (Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu and Ubud), we are on top of it and happy to share our local knowledge with you and tell you about what we love about these delish restaurants in 2024.

Koral in Nusa Dua

One of the most unique restaurants is Koral, an underwater water kingdom filled with aquatic sea life. Let’s not forget you come here for the 5-star food. Located at The Apurva Kempinski in Nusa Dua Bali’s first aquarium restaurant, you’ll be mesmerised by the fish swimming around you as you tuck into some of the best seafood in Bali. Koral is a special occasion, but if you’re holidaying in Bali, it really should be on your dining bucket list for the sheer ambience. Try the Koral Degustation menu, which has tasty oysters, Japanese seabass, and slow-cooked spiny lobster lavishly tossed in a mango vinaigrette. It can be a bit pricey, but you pay for the experience, memories and delicious food.

Satoshi in Umalas

Satoshi is Japanese cuisine taken to the next level in this swish restaurant in the enclave of Umalas on the outskirts of Canggu. Here, they’re experimenting with food ( in a good way) and seriously pushing culinary boundaries with a mix of Japanese and Italian-style food. The place is brand new in March 2024, and the new modern, chic, sleek, minimal interiors stand out in the relatively quiet suburban Umalas area. There’s a massive wine cellar, and the open-plan kitchen with the busy chefs adds to the buzzy yet contemporary and stylish vibe. These guys are bound for a Michelin star with their food. Start with the salmon ceviche or the tuna tartar and crispy nori, and for mains, try the ravioli gyoza style or the butterfish miso. Make sure you leave room for the Godzilla matcha cheesecake. We recommend chilling out and eating this at the comfy sofas at the Music Library. It’s an experience like no other in Canggu. Make it a date night and enjoy the whole ambience.

Uma Gardens in Umalas

Umalas is nestled between Seminyak and Canggu and is known for its picturesque rice fields and gorgeous greenery. Umalas is now the ‘in-place’ for foodies, ex-pats and holidaymakers who want an alternative to other busier parts of the island. Right in the centre of this beauty are the beautiful Uma Gardens. It’s a fire-based restaurant with a casual vibe, and the philosophy is about connecting people through fresh food. So, arrive early and kick start the night with a few pre-dinner cocktails or apertivo in the cosy indoor lounge area. Then it’s off to the heart of the restaurant, where there are communal tables for hours of tasty eating, socialising and enjoying the Bali vibe. The food is down-to-earth, honest and unpretentious, which makes for a great night out – even for the kids. We loved the pork belly and had the juiciest prawns ever!

Roots in Pererenan

Open for brekkie ’til lunch and in the heart of hip and happening, Pererenan Roots is all plant-based and delivers fabulous vegan dishes. The food is all locally sourced and is heavily influenced by the seasonal ingredients available. For most vegan lovers, Canggu, Roots is a foodie’s dream come true with a selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads and daytime cocktails, too, if you feel like a post-swim drinkie. For fussy vegans, you can customise your bowls (Alchemy in Ubud and Bingin have the same fantastic formula) or let the chef create one for you. Sweets and fresh juices are also available. Roots also claim to have the best Bloody Mary in Pererenan, so check that out. Ex.Pat Roaster supplies the coffee, so you know it will be special. We loved the crunchy prawn wrap and the massive salad bowl with tons of goodies like beetroot, carrots, loads of avo and marinated feta – so yummy!!!

Pho Mo in Berawa

Berawa’s restaurant scene is booming, and tucked away near the huge playing field is an excellent Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Mo. I love the name, and you’re gonna love their Pho (Vietnamese soup topped with the freshest veggies and the best locally sourced ingredients). Pho Mo’s soups highlight is the homemade broth jam-packed with goodness and super healthy. Plus, at Pho Mo (FOMO – get it??), you get to eat in a super-chilled place with a cosy, unpretentious vibe. And the prices are very reasonable for Berawa. So go for the well-known traditional dishes, like Pho Bo (noodle soup with thinly sliced rib-eye) and Pho Ga (braised chicken), which are perfect for Bali’s notorious rainy days in the wet season.

Jalapeño – Canggu

Originally a Sanur creation, Jalapeño has made its way to popular Canggu and is a Tex-Mex beauty. Who doesn’t love fresh burritos, tacos and your favourite meat dishes fresh from the pan? We absolutely love the tuna tostada and the enchiladas. Plus, if you’re coming with friends for a night out, the tequila-based cocktails are delish! Never mind the hangover; you’re on holiday – so go for it. If you’re coming with kids, end the meal with yummy fried churros and dips -and even if it’s just a girl’s night out, you might as well go for it and enjoy the churros yourselves. The vibe is easygoing casual, and portions are large, in the central Berawa area, if you are craving Mexican, Jalapeño is a MUST-TRY restaurant.

Honey & Smoke in Ubud

Chef Will Meyrick has done it again with his culinary creation in Ubud, Honey & Smoke. Here you can dine on super creative dishes from a wood-fired bistro based around Modern Australian dining. An open fire cooks the food, and as they say on the website: ‘Cooking with charcoal or wood fire creates a much better flavour. It’s a really natural thing for us to install here in Ubud. Our food is blessed by the fire” Make sure you try the char-grilled prawns or the wood-fired snapper – you’ll feel like you’re at an authentic Aussie BBQ in the heart of Ubud. The ingredients are fresh, and the presentation is impressive, as you’d expect from a chef of the calibre of Will Meyrick. The cocktail list is extensive, so make sure you enjoy a few aperitifs before the meal and soak up the gorgeous interiors. A meal at Honey and Smoke is a real treat.

Kong Bali in Berawa

Located in the super-trendy area of Berawa in Canggu Kong is one of the new restaurants on the culinary dining scene for 2023. The interiors are rich in greens, timber, and Asian artwork – making for a romantic date night dinner. The food is Asian fusion. We loved the piri piri prawns and lobster ravioli, for starters. And, for mains, the Lamb Rack and Aussie Barramundi & Clams are real winners. There is an extensive wine list and tasty cocktails for pre-dinner starters. Definitely go with the coconut mojito or the Circa 21 with Gin – you’ll love it. Great for lunch or dinner. Well-priced and super affordable. Dining at Kong Bali is more than the food; it’s an experience.

Huge Restaurant in Seminyak

Sophisticated, upscale and uber-sassy dining is what you’ll get when you dine at Huge in Seminyak. The menu says it all: prawns and mango sauce, teriyaki salmon, and even burgers. It’s a bit pricey, but that’s cool for the experience, and the food is sensational, so well worth it. A night out at Huge is about the experience, so dress up for it and enjoy a night out in Seminyak. The menu has 13 curated cocktails that are amazing for those pre-dinner drinks or having a night out with your mates and you want to have a few drinks. The service is impeccable, and the produce is all freshly procured. Huge is a great night out – but book ahead.

La Lucciola on Petitenget Beach, Seminyak

What can we say about La Lucciola that has yet to be said online? Anyone searching online for fab places to dine out in Seminyak will stumble across this restaurant gem. Situated right on Petitenget Bach La Lucciola, it is an institution in Bali’s dining scene and sets the tone for future restaurants and cafes. It trailblazed the culinary scene and was one of the first places to offer high-end, sophisticated dining in a casual setting. With fresh Italian and super-delicious food, sensational beach views, and warm tropical breezes, it’s the ideal venue to sit down with the crew and your family on a hot date or just with the kids and enjoy the tastiest food you’ll find in Bali. Now that’s saying something with all the competition out there. But La Lucciola blitzes everyone, hands down. I loved the vegetarian antipasto and garlic scampi for entrees, and for the mains, go for the Mahi Mahi or super-yummy linguini with prawns. There’s an extensive wine and cocktail list, so settle in for the afternoon or evening and enjoy the experience. I advise you to book well ahead as you can’t rock up and get a table; it’s always booked out. Please don’t risk it!

Milk and Madu in Berawa & Batu Bolong, Canggu

Milk and Madu is a mainstay on the cafe scene in the Canggu area now with 3 locations (Berawa, Batu Bolong & Ubud). It’s super duper popular and packed with families, ex-pats, local Indonesians on holiday, online daters, digital nomads and anyone left on the island. Why, might you ask? Because it’s excellent food, a top vibe, and good value. Plus, for families, there’s a kiddie’s playground. You get everything here for all pallets and budgets. Burgers, pizza, salads, pasta, wraps, smoothie bowls, salads, cakes, coffee and alcohol, and the whole shebang are on the Milk and Madu menu. The vibe is buzzy, the staff are helpful, and the service is pronto. It’s a casual hang and is one of the first cafes in Canggu that commercially offered this type of healthy Western food. For holidaymakers, Canggu’s Milk and Madu is your go-to restaurant while you’re still deciding where to go. It’s the restaurant you’ll keep on coming back to time and time again.

Mason in Canggu

Mason delivers the WOW factor in terms of food, ambience, sophisticated, easy-going vibe and delish cocktails, all with a splash of Gin. We love the Botanist with tangerine …so yummy! Mason has a decent menu where most dishes are from the wood-fired oven, like the barramundi fillet, and the ribeye is definitely a winner. There are breads, dip for starters, and a range of salads. But don’t fill up on the mains as you’ll need some room for dessert. The pavlova and the chocolate cake are a perfect ending. Mason has become so popular that they’ve now opened up in Uluwatu. Prices are reasonable, the location is super-central, and it makes a great night for the whole family, so take the kids or come with your mates and enjoy a fab meal and then hit the beach clubs in Canggu for a few more brewskis or cocktails.

Mowie’s in Berawa

Chilled vibes, great food and their in-house bakery, make Mowies in Berawa a place to hang for the day; come with the kids for a feed and enjoy casual dining. Oh yes, this is one of the only cafes in the Canggu area with a pool. Yes, they have a pool, so you can hop in for a cool dip and watch the kids play as you enjoy brekkie, lunch or dinner. The food is, as expected, the usual fare of burgers, smoothies, a bit of Indonesian, bagels, fish and chips, coffees, desserts and salads. Mowie’s is frequented by loads of digital nomads, families (because of the pool) and holidaymakers who stumble across the cafe after some Berawa beach time. So bring your bathers and enjoy the low prices, feel-good food and tropical ambience at Mowie’s.

Nook in Umalas

Anyone who has been to Bali will know they are near Nook because of the traffic queues from people lining up to eat here. They mostly come from Jakarta, but many holidaymakers want that ‘Nook experience’. Why? Because of the great ricefield views, chilled Balinese vibe, extensive menu, and great-tasting Western and Indonesian food. I always come here for the nasi campur, but if you bring the kids, there are the usual burgers, fries etc. Nook is so popular that they’ve opened up in Berawa. They are called Milu by Nook. Try the smoothie bowls, smashed avo, the huge Reuben sandwich, and the yummy Mahi Mahi.

The Grumpy Butcher in Petitenget

The team that brought the super-popular steakhouse Boy’N’Cow to Bali has now launched a second venue and branded it the Grumpy Butcher in the Petitenget area or Seminyak. The restaurant is open-air, spacious with rice field views, and super family-friendly. The kids will love the BBQ vibe and the smokehouse steaks, sausages and meats. At the heart of the Grumpy Baker is the open-air kitchen where the flames cook tender meat to perfection over burning embers. The Grumpy Baker menu is a carnivorous delight with coffee-wood smoked beef brisket, succulent fall-off-the-bone barbecue ribs, and house-made sausages. Yumeee!! The Grumpy Butcher has other delicious treats, like 500g porterhouse to grilled salmon and octopus. They also have so many incredible southern USA-style sides, such as homemade coleslaw, mac and cheese, and, let’s not forget, beef tacos. Finally, if you have any room for dessert, there are lashings of pavlova and bread butter pudding. If you fancy a few beers, diners can wash down their steaks with beer on tap or perhaps a glass of red.

Sardine – Seminyak

Sardine is a Seminyak institution, but they, unfortunately, had to close during COVID-19. But, good news, Sardine has opened its doors to the public and is under the new management of the K Club. The restaurant is still the same with its classic allure and gorgeous al fresco dining area with rice field views( yes, there are still ricefield views in Seminyak). Sardine is all about fresh seafood using local daily freshly caught fish. The food here is impressive, which is why Sardine has such an excellent reputation). You’ll love the yellowfin tuna sashimi or smoked sardines for starters, and for mains, the pan-roasted seabass or the barramundi cooked in banana leaf is a must. The dessert menu is super tempting, with chocolate mousse and fig cheesecake – how fantastic! In addition to its famous signature selections, Chef I Wayan Yuti Yadya prepares meat, poultry or vegetarian dishes to meet all pallets. Make sure you come early before dinner and enjoy a few cocktails to make this evening super-special.
