Going on holiday is a wonderful experience for anyone, and Bali is one of the most popular destinations for Aussie travellers seeking sun, warm weather, great food, and friendly people.

One of the most popular things to do is treat yourself and the family, or if you’re coming for a group getaway with your mates or the girls, is to rent some Bali villas and enjoy some fun times in the privacy of your own villa.  Whether you’re looking at Seminyak villas, Canggu villas or even a luxury Bali villa nowadays, you expect the very best in your holiday villa accommodation.

You want to arrive at the villa and see a clean place with the beds made and the linen fresh, you want a clean pool and well-maintained garden areas. And, in 99% of the cases, this is the case. So let’s put that aside for the moment. And, the next thing you want is to have peace and quiet. You want to be able to relax by the pool and watch the kids play, read a book and enjoy some quality downtime where the only noise you hear is the chirping of the birds, music from your Spotify and the occasional ringing of bells at a Balinese ceremony. The very last thing you want to hear is the noise of a full-on construction site going on next door to you.

Bali is experiencing one of its biggest building booms in Asia since the COVID-19 pandemic, with villa developments emerging in popular tourist areas like Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu (where the development is particularly notable), and even Jimbaran and Nusa Dua. The whole island is evolving, transforming and metamorphosing into villa heaven. Everywhere you look, in every alleyway and every street, there are workers loading bricks, sand, drilling and cutting metal and timber.

The place is crazy, and the unfortunate consequence of this is that you just might have rented a villa near, opposite or next door to one of these behemoth construction sites. And, if this is your first time in Bali and you are unlucky enough to be near one of these sites, then god help you and the rest of your holiday, as it’s going to be an absolute nightmare.

The noise is relentless, the dust is toxic, and the workers (and on some construction sites, there can be dozens) do not speak a word of English. They work from about 8 am to 5 or 6 pm, and they rarely take a break. And if you think they stop on weekends, they don’t. It’s a relentless grind 7 days that can go on till late in the evening.

Construction sites in Bali are notoriously bad for holidaymakers renting a villa, as there are absolutely no construction or noise law limits in Bali. And, if you approach one of these workers, also known as tukang, and ask them politely to stop work at 5 pm, they won’t understand a word. Most of the workers are from Java or other islands with limited education, making communication with them extremely difficult.

Having said all that, and quietly putting the fear of god into you about villa accommodation, I feel that I am doing the right thing, as you should be aware of what could happen and which does happen quite frequently for Bali holidaymakers in recent times.

2) If construction has just started and you’re settled into the villa (this construction was unknown to us), we will offer you a discount on your remaining nights or help you find a new villa. If we cannot find you an alternate accommodation, we will refund you the unused nights.

How to pick a villa not near a construction site.

With all the villas on offer, the task of choosing the right one is challenging, and to top it off, you want to find one that’s as far as possible from any construction. Here are some great tips to help you find a peaceful and wonderful villa that’s super quiet.

1) Try to pick a villa in a gated complex where you are far enough from the road so that if there is any construction, all you’ll hear are muffled noises. Most major tourist areas have numerous gated estates housing villas in secure, peaceful environments.

2) Ask your villa consultant before committing to any booking and parting with money if there is any construction near the villa, and if there is, can they recommend others? The beauty of using a holiday villa booking agency like Bali Villa Escapes over other online travel agencies (like Agoda) is that you can actually get answers from a real person.

3) Bali is super popular, and in many cases, you know someone who’s there at the moment or going there before you. Ask them to visit the villa you’ve booked, take a look around, and check for any construction. If so, consider looking at other options.

4) Check all online reviews and see if the current ones mention noise or construction. Get your villa consultant to validate these reviews.

5) Go for a villa that’s far from anywhere, among the rice fields, near a river or on the beach, where the chances are a construction site next door is more remote.

Personally, as the owner of a fabulous villa in Canggu, I’ve experienced the hassle of living next to a construction site firsthand. Trust me, you won’t want to deal with it, especially on holiday. In a word, it’s brutal. Noise, dust, and non-stop can wear you down.

You should believe the hype and, in some cases, negative feedback about Bali. The endless traffic, noise, flooding and pollution are real! Yes, it’s counterintuitive for us to be discussing this, but it’s the 10,000-pound gorilla in the room and needs to be addressed. On the bright side, there are still loads and loads of villas that are in tranquil locations far from noise and construction. You just have to be smart and do your due diligence. Yes, it requires more research, but this is the reality in Bali right now!
